I'm going to be deja-vuing over the next few days as I'm blogging for Sportsgirl first before it goes up here but actually, meandering about and re-thunking my words for my own blog, may add an ounce of clarity... or complicate matters depending on the show. I've got down my initial thoughts on the Romance was Born show in a fit of excitement and fortunately the excitement hasn't subsided and if anything has deepened over the course of a day. I don't think I could have gotten such a dynamic and impressive start to what has already been a heavily eventful day. Except posts on said events to go up slower alas...

I think I may have thrown out the phrase 'cartoon couture' when I last wrote about Romance was Born. Granted at the show last year, there were dinosaur sound effects and smoking boulders. Still, I hang my head in shame and retract that phrase because their latest S/S 12 show we saw at the Mitchell Library yesterday (they were hellbent on using that space hence why the show had to go slightly off-schedule...) had definitely elevated beyond being cartoonish. The collection entitled 'The Oracle' was a vision that fused so many elements together that actually whatever seemingly outlandish elements they employed (mainly towards the end in the more costume-like pieces) made complete and utter sense by the end of the show. Perhaps the layers of baby's breath adorning the library were an indication of the lighter but ultimately more emphatic touch that Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales had given their collection.

The Never Ending Story, the kohl-rimmed femmes of the jazz age in the 1920s, then 30s Art Deco patterns, early 20th century aristocratic eccentrics like Marchesa Luisa Casati, imaginary mystics as illustrated in fantasy novels and fictional empresses and from the ancient world - all of that comes together in a collection where certain details can be picked out as being derived from the 1920s but you never get a fully clear picture of their direct influences and that's probably why a dropped waisted dress in the hands of RWB looks mysteriously renewed and rejuvenated. This partly is thanks to the prints of course which has always been a RWB feature and this time the hand paintings and digital prints are by the Australian contemporary artist Neil, in line with RWB's ongoing collaborations with local artists. The prints glint with the surface detailing of amulets and precious jewels as well as Aztec-looking pattern formations, Art Deco skyscrapers and printed pearls, which actually makes the clothes decorative in an approchable way, in that you want to wear and share their superbly focused vision. There's also a newly found lightness in this collection where embellishment derived from pure fantasy never feel heavy-handed or for want of a better word, clunky...

The dramatics of course amplify over the course of the show and I get the feeling that Anna and Luke are never going to fully fall in line with what is expected of them as a selling fashion label but instead their one-off pieces and costumes that really tell a tale to spectators live on in this collection, inspired by the magical land of Fantasia where the Empress' magical talisman Auryn represent two worlds. You almost want an accompanying graphic novel with Romance was Born's collections because their tale is told only through intricate surface detailing. Still the show itself played its part in telling their story as it was accompanied by the Sydney Youth Orchestra as well as an Australian Youth Choir which added pomp to these Queens, Empresses, Contessas and Maharanis that emerged as a triumphant end to this show.

I hate beginning sentances with "You really had to BE there to see it..." but honestly, seeing the final line-up of models at the back of the library honestly reminded me of a tableaux vivant... like something that might have graced the Windmill Theatre except of course the models aren't nude...

I could also boil this post down to this one picture where one of the models from the latter half of the collection emerged from the library to meet a sea of photographers and onlookers magically crowding around her, fallen under the Romance was Born fantasy...

I'm not usually one to point out celebrities at shows but I had to with Cate Blanchett, who isn't one of those types that turns up to everything including the opening of an envelope... she's a long terms supporter of Romance was Born and yes, I did want to say to her... "OMG - I rewatched Elizabeth the other day and holy crap, I keep forgetting how utterly brilliant you were in it!"

ROOM OF THE WEEK 3.17: "It's time for some fresh, fun glamour for this week's Room of the Week! I'm totally swooning for these adjoining rooms and the way the bright pinks + patterns are playing off each other while traditional pieces and modern lines mix in seamlessly...

Do you recognize the fabric on the sofa? It's a fun little Josef Frank print, which I seriously covet. I love all the gilded details too (of course!) and can you ever go wrong with that simple acrylic coffee table? I think not.

I had to point out the art in the dining room because it really connects the two areas together. The designer made an obvious choice to have the rooms really compliment each other because the area definitely could have been treated separately, but by bringing them together it opens up the whole house and makes the space feel much larger.

I never would have chosen such a pop art-inspired, bold colored piece for this traditional home, but it totally works! One word for this whole space - FUN!

For the last three decades, the Italian home products manufacturer Alessi has been at the forefront of design, producing instant icons like Michael Graves’s bird-whistle teakettle (above), Philippe Starck’s infamous Juicy Salif juicer and Richard Sapper’s elegant espresso pot — a fixture on many a yuppie’s high-end cooktop. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is celebrating the 90-year-old company with an exhibition, ‘‘Alessi: Ethical and Radical,’’ which opens Nov. 21. Central to Alessi’s success is its creative mastermind, Alberto Alessi, a grandson of the founder, who has run the company since the 1970s. ‘‘He’s absolutely unique in the amount of time and money that he has spent on design,’’ said Kathryn Hiesinger, the exhibition’s curator. Included in the show are planned reissues of designs from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, a time that Alberto Alessi describes as ‘‘predesign,’’ before the rise of glossy ‘‘designer’’ products — which is ironic coming from the man who helped invent the category. But, as Heisinger explained, ‘‘Alberto is now in his minimalist, simplicity mode; he’s against overdesign.’’ Well, he’s been right before.

Studio Guilherme Torres designed the GT House in Londrina, Brazil.

The young Brazilian architect Guilherme Torres chose to live in a small studio in Londrina, Brazil. The place would lodge an artist’s painting atelier and was under redecoration for over 10 years by the architect himself. The present project came to life due to several problems found in the building such as electricity mains and rewiring, wall cracks and seepage. Within a month, all wall coatings were removed and rebuilt whilst the architect decided to build a brick table and couch. “As a furniture designer, I decided to follow an opposite thread to what I usually do and create something permanent, stable”, says the architect.

Not only is the table used to hold books and collections but it is also a place to work and eat at, while the couch stands from wall to wall and has two black fabric mattresses. The cushions were made with fabric cutouts with patterns designed by the stylist Adriana Barra to Micasa, São Paulo’s design temple. The kitchen was compressed in a 1.40m wide by 3m long space. The concrete floor was coated with rubber so as to avoid oil stains while the wall received plotage images inspired in Arabic mosaic, designed by the architect himself.

The resident’s bedroom bears resemblance to a loft, with a warmer atmosphere compared to the rest of the house due to the exposed brick wall at the top of the bed. The electrical wiring system becomes more evident in the guest’s bedroom, located in a mezzanine floor above the living-room. The design was inspired by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, a Brazilian architect who won the Pritzker prize in 2006 and famous for exploring the Brutalist Architecture, in which the architecture functional mechanisms such as hydraulic and electrical pipes are at sight. Modern and avant-garde, the whole building cost approximately U$ 6,000.00 and the low cost is due to its simplicity in architectural solutions.

With the Pope campaigning to 'save Christmas', the Royal Mail's seasonal stamps for 2010 will feature two mythical characters whose story has been told and retold down the years so that it is now central to the communal experience of that special time of year – Wallace and Gromit

A somewhat defensive press release from the Royal Mail, no doubt anticipating a Daily Mail headline or two, states that 'Royal Mail's policy for Christmas stamps is to alternate non-secular and secular themes. The 2009 stamps showed the nativity as depicted in stained glass windows from the Pre-Raphaelite era and in 2010 a secular theme is featured' ie 'Wallace gives a thumbs-up as Gromit tries on his seasonal gift of a bone-themed pullover' as featured on the £1.46 stamp, below.

The stamps were created by Royal Mail's design team, working with Nick Park and Aardman Animations. They will be available from November 2.

HUSSEIN CHALAYAN will unveil an installation and film that merges art, music and

fashion

this

September in London's Lisson Gallery. The multi-disciplinary project, which harks back to the

designer's own Turkish heritage, will feature a mixture of audio, film, music and sculpture.

I remember my grandmother croon "Uzgunum Leyla" while she was cooking delicious turkish pastry in her humble kitchen.. I was probably 5 or 6, and was not aware of the meaning of that song, but I was so moved by its melody even as a child, I was trying to accompany her... Bringing back memories, I applaud and appreciate Chalayan who shares our wondrous classical music heritage with wider crowds.

"My approach has always been interdisciplinary; the new work is an extension of this," said Chalayan. "There is a certain freedom to working in an art context that has allowed me to explore the ideas that underpin my work."

The installation plays with the idea of layered musical composition, looking at - not only cultural influences - but at the sounds created by different instruments. The exhibition proves again Chalayan's skill as an artist as well as a designer he adds an audio-based element to his venture.

"Hussein Chalayan is rightly celebrated not just for his fashion but as one of London's leading innovators in visual culture," said Greg Hilty, the curatorial director of the Lisson Gallery. "His sensitive play with the history and poetic potential of wide-ranging cultural forms make him a natural fit for Lisson's programme of exhibitions."

public on the 15th September in a former depot in East London. For 2 weeks, during

London Design Festival, it will serve as a melting pot of people and ideas.

Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba (December 11, 1927 – May 3, 1990), later known as Dorothy Horan, and best known as Dovima, was amodel during the 1950s.

Born in New York City, Dovima was discovered on a sidewalk in New York by an editor at Vogue, and had a photo shoot with Irving Penn the following day. She worked closely with Richard Avedon, whose photograph of her in a floor-length black evening gown with circus elephants—"Dovima with the Elephants"^[1]—taken at the Cirque d'hiver, Paris, in August 1955, has become an icon. The gown was the first evening dress designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint-Laurent.^[2]

A supermodel before the term became widely known, Dovima was reputed to be the highest-paid model of her time. She had a cameo role as an aristocratic-looking, but empty-headed, fashion model with a Jackson Heights whine: Marion in Funny Face (Paramount, 1957).

Dovima gave birth to a daughter named Alison on July 14, 1958, in Manhattan. Alison's father is Dovima's second husband, Alan Murray.

She died of liver cancer on May 3, 1990 at the age of 62. After her death, Richard Avedon said, "She was the last of the great elegant, aristocratic beauties... the most remarkable and unconventional beauty of her time."

I am dying over the windows softly traced in that aqua (presumably to call more attention to the fabulous architecture) . The mushroom colored settee is a departure from the expected sofa, giving the light permission to flood right in where a sofa back would usually be cutting it off. Fluffy white pillows reinforce the glow.

There is sparkle everywhere! The tiny mosaic tiles (in the same appropriate aqua!), bubbly mantle piece, benches floating on lucite legs, chrome coffee table base, silver candle sticks in the fireplace... all together these accents shout glitz and glamour (and yet the room seems to seductively whisper, don't you think?).

This chandelier makes me giddy! The delicate vertical elements pair perfectly opposite the glowing glass bubbles reaching for the table. The coral ceiling and wall trim are a great way to introduce color without being forced to paint an entire wall. I think those tulips may have been custom dyed... they're too perfect!

The dining table being set at an unexpected angle and the fun zebra sideboard make the space dynamic and exciting (Bonus: It's fairly easy to change the material on the sideboard on a whim! This is an easy and impactful way to bring in some bold graphics without spending a fortune).

In using this style to inspire your space,

* Consider painting your trim an aqua color and letting the walls take a back seat in ivory.

* Choose an art deco inspired occasional chair in a patterned upholstery. Leave the wood very dark or have it refinished with a dark lacquer.

* Add a few patterned upholstered pieces that don't match each other perfectly. Even better if the material has a little splash of metallic.

* Furniture should rest on a thin leg (or even a lucite leg!) to impart a light and airy feeling.

* Accent with a soft coral, grays, aquas and tans.

* Don't forget a dash of sparkle and glam, after all, this is a Hollywood home!

You'll get a little something like this...

Cafe De Paris restaurant & casino at Monte Carlo.

It is located near the famous Monte Carlo Casino where you have to pay an entrance fee, 10 euros.

The Monte Carlo Casino is one of the most notable tourist attractions of Monaco. The casino complex is a gambling facility which also includes the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo, an opera and ballet house, and the headquarters of the Ballets de Monte Carlo. It is situated in the Monte Carlo quarter, although the citizens of Monaco are forbidden to enter the gaming rooms.^[1] It hosts the annual European Poker Tour Grand Final.

Bu hikayenin de sonuna gelmiş bulunmaktayız.: "Erik İngiltere'ye gitti. Öyle melül melül bakma kitabı alsaydın olayın ne olduğunu anlardın. Neyse işte aman gitti bebe... O yüzden biraz yazasım yoktu, açıyorum sayfayı tam yazamaya başlıyorum yarıda kalıyor, kapatıyorum. Hani böyle hala umudum var, o uçağa binip telefonunun kapalı olduğunu anlayana kadar dedim gelecek, 'ehehe kerizsin kızım sen nassı kandırdım' diyecek gibi geliyordu. Demedi... Onun yerine elini karnıma sokup bütün iç organlarımı parçalamayı seçti.
Gitti işte..
Yani tecrübelerimden yola çıkarak gayet açık ve net diyebilirdim ki bu iş bitecekti zaten. Hani evet mantığım olmayacak diyordu ama gel sen onu içime söyle o hala umudum vardı.. Ki son günlerimiz işkence halini almıştı, sevişmediğimiz zamanlar kavga ediyorduk. Ben ona yaklaştıkça çırpındıkça o daha çok uzaklaşıyordu. Her şey bitiyordu ve ben hiçbir şey yapamıyordum.

Onun öncesinde kurduğum bütün hayaller bir anda yalan oldu. Bihter'in kendini vurması gibi şeyler aklımdan geçti gitti. Allaaam öleyim şurada öldür beni ne olur bu gerizekalı ne bok yediğini anlasın. Ben kanserim mi desem acaba, belki vazgeçer gitmekten.. Yok yae şey erkekliğe bok sürdürmeyeyim gururlu olayım şey diyeyim 'ayy zaten benim başka sevgilim var' oha bu da olmaz. Allahım ne cevap versem ne desem, desem ki 'tamam git yeminle beklerim seni ben gelirim' olmaz zamanında demiştim bunları, bunlara rağmen o cümleleri kurdu bana. Sesini duymamış gibi mi yapsam lan 'aloo alloo duymuyorum aşkım sesini, tamam tamam ben de seni seviyorum' böyle mi yapsam acaba. Bu salak o zaman mesaj atar. En güzeli acındırayım ağlayayım, bak evet evet ağla hemen 'ben de tam sana hediye almıştım pekiii' de ve kapat telefonu. Ne ağlayacam lan, bu dümbük için baksana şuna benle dalga geçer gibi yüzüğü taktı 3 gün sonra 'ben gidiyorum' dedi, şimdi de 'her şey senin iyiliğin için' mavrasını çekiyor.
Ağzımdan çıkan tek kelime 'hala arkadaşız ama bir şeye ihtiyacın olursa ararsın' demek oldu. Kapattım telefonu. Ve döndüm gittim...
....
Maalesef devamında bu kadar ılımlı ve anlayışlı olmayı beceremedim. Ardından akşam içtim içtim içtim tam tamına sayım 67 tane 'allah senin belanı versin' ile başlayan mesajları döşedim bütün gece ona. Hiç birine cevap bile vermedi.
O kadar alışmışım ki ona gittiği gün her şey çok saçma geldi. Giyinmek bile istemedim, sanki bütün kıyafetlerimi onun için almıştım. Sabah kalktım her zamanki gibi dolabın başında yarım saat kitli kaldım ama bu kez ağlayarak. Geçen gün aldığım siyah badyi hiç görmeyecekti mesela. Sonra banyoya girdim, acaba arar mı ben banyodeyken diye düşündüm, sonra bu düşündüğüme üzüldüm. O aramayacaktı artık.
Dışarı çıktığımda karşıdaki travestileri gördüm, ona bunu anlatmalıyım diye düşünüyordum -ki artık bunun bir anlamı olmayacaktı. telefonum günde 20 defa çalmayacaktı, her aradığında salak saçma şeyleri ona anlatmayacaktım. Bir gün beraber gideriz diye mekan arayışında olmayacaktım, tatil planı yapmayacaktım, gelinlik hayali kurmayacaktım, annesini nasıl yok ederim diye düşünmeyecektim, artık hiçbir şeyin anlamı yoktu, artık o yoktu ve ben 'biz' döneminden 'ben' dönemine geçmiştim.
Bir de çok garip sadece ona ağlamıyorum, var olan bütün ilişkilerime ağlıyorum günlerdir. Hiç böyle delicesine körkütük sevilmemişim lan ben, paso hesap kitap meselesi olmuş aşklarım. Bana daha kimse 'sonsuza kadar yanında olacağım' diye söz vermedi. O da söz vermemişti, verir gibi yapmıştı...
Böylece bu hikaye de bitti.. Geriye bana bir yüzük kaldı sadece onu da saklamayı düşünmüyorum. Satıp parasıyla kendime bir sene yetecek kadar orkid alacam...

Meze - Aymis's Circassian Chicken: "

If some people are born with a green thumb, some are definitely born with a natural cook's hand and my sister-in-law, Duygu's mother, Aymis hanim is definitely one of those talented individuals. Whatever she touches seems to turn into a gastronomical delight. None of our special family gatherings at Duygu's house would be complete without her mother's incredible 'Zeytinyagli Dolma's' (stuffed grape leaves in olive oil) or 'Barbunya' (pink beans in olive oil), yummm... 'Dolma' is the one food that would separate the girls from the women in case of Turkish cooking, since it entails many hours of wrapping the rice and onion combination filling in thin grape leaves; the size and the firmness of the Dolma pronounces the expertise level of the preparer. It is one of my favorite foods and I am especially fond of Aymis hanim's Dolma's.

Circassian chicken, 'Cerkez Tavugu,' is another specialty that is the sign of a good Turkish cook. The actual recipe is suppose to be very hard because it requires extracting the oil of walnuts; I have never, even questioned, how that is done, so I cannot tell you but this recipe, in my opinion, tastes better than the real thing. It is super easy and incredibly delicious.

Getting a recipe with actual measurements out of a real Turkish cook is next to impossible, These women must have all learned how to make these delicacies on their mother's laps and are very easy going about giving out recipes since everyone's pinch or hand full is different; the resulting product can be extremely variable. I have learned after many melt-downs that all you need to do is relax and trust your taste buds. If you get the basic ingredients fresh and rightly prepared (in this case boiling the chicken until it is tender) the sky is the limit.
I am including the recipe for this but I have to admit that I start out with the boiled chicken and keep on adding more and more yogurt and salt and even garlic until I get it to the consistency and taste I desire.

A WEEK IN VIENNA

Yes a week, I can say it is a bit long to spend a week at Vienna. No no no it was really long :) I admit it's a beautiful city but you can visit all the museums and sightseeing places in 4 days, for sure. We were there for the Viennafair which is an art fair including 110 galleries mostly from Central and Eastern Europe. A view from our stand is below:

Must do things :

See the Mozart statue and put your glasses on one of the angels and give a kiss. That's what we did and had a lot of fun :)

Vienna is famous for its Schnitzel and Sacher Torte which you can have the original one in lovely Hotel Sacher. Its caffe's are worth seeing. Located in the heart of the city, Hotel Sacher is closed to the Opera House and Albertina museum.

The Original Sacher-Torte has been the most famous cake in the world since 1832 and the original recipe a well-kept secret of our hotel. Only the Original Sacher-Torte is produced according to this original recipe: The basis is a chocolate cake, thinly coated by hand with best-quality apricot jam. The chocolate icing over this is the crowning glory. The Original Sacher-Torte tastes best with a portion of unsweetened whipped cream, complemented perfectly with a “Wiener Melange” (coffee with milk) from the Original Sacher Café.

After the breath-taking cake the one thing you should definitely do is to take a carriage ride around the city.

For breakfast or a quick snack, especially for a desert go to Demel.

For the best Shnitzel in town, Ofenloch is the best choice. One of the oldest restaurant around town.

Make a wish at St. Stephen's Cathedral

See the Spanish Stallions exercise in the morning at the Riding School.

For all the art happenings around the city, you shouldn't miss Museums Quartier. Go to Leopold Museum for Klimt and Egon Schiele.

Book a ticket at the Opera House and don't miss Tosca like we did :).

After you left the opera grab a bite, at the sausage stand next to Albertine Museum. The best hot dog in the city !

Because we were there for the fair, we spent most of our time window shopping on the Kartner Strasse where all the known shops are located. A view of lovely Viennese

porcelains.

The Beethoven Frieze is a painting by Gustav Klimt.

In 1902, Klimt painted the Beethoven Frieze for the 14th Vienna Secessionist exhibition, which was intended to be a celebration of the composer and featured a monumental polychrome sculpture by Max Klinger. Meant for the exhibition only, the frieze was painted directly on the walls with light materials. After the exhibition the painting was preserved, although it did not go on display again until 1986. The Beethoven Frieze is now on permanent display in the Vienna Secession Building.

And finally don't leave without stopping by the Belvedere. See the famous painting "The Kiss by Gustav Klimt" and wander around the gardens for me, don't miss out the museum store!

Paulo Coelho's books have no culture barrier, they speak to everyone regardless what corner of the world one is from, I am currently reading Coelho's Brida that is a very inspiring book, really amazing… got me thinking about a lot of themes that truly matter in life. Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi has just completed the new covers for Patrick Süskind's two classic novels from the 1980s, Perfume and The Pigeon...

London-based Haapaniemi graduated from Lahti Design Institute in Finland and has since worked as a designer at Diesel and the Diesel Stylelab.

Now signed to Big Active as an illustrator, he has also published his own books, ceramics and even wall tapestries.

In a new project for Penguin, Haapaniemi has helped to repackage German writer Patrick Süskind's two novels from the 1980s. Perfume is undoubtedly the better known of the two (having shifted millions of copies and been turned in to a film in 2006) but many fans of the notoriously secretive writer prefer the more spookily existential tale about a security guard's encounter with a lone pigeon.

When you google the word "Vintage Clothing" you get 135.000.000 results. Tonight one name will be added to that list and hope in a very short time it will rise among the others and will highly appreciated.

Saba Kuseyrioglu is a dearest friend whom I've spent my best times in London. Tonite she is opening a vintage boutique called the "MATCHBOX".

Of course I'll be there too. The opening photos will be fabulous I am sure.. Wait for my next post!

Illustrators Peskimo and Chris Dickason have teamed up to put on a tea-time themed exhibition opening this Friday March 19 at Start - a new shop and exhibition space in the heart of Bristol...

The exhibition, entitled Tease Made, will celebrate, Peskimo tells us, 'the social rituals, history, iconography and biscuit-dunking goodness of enjoying a cup of tea.' There will be prints, paintings, sketches and sculptural pieces on show. Here are a few images that will be on display...

Start is a new art space and shop which will look to exhibit work by both established and up and coming artists working in the South West region across the mediums of illustration, graphic design, photography, painting and printmaking. The shop will look to stock and sell work by local artists and musicians, and stock a small range of art magazines, prints, cards, jewellery, CDs, T-shirts and vinyl and plush toys. LIMITED EDITION BOOK OF ARTIST SERKAN ÖZKAYA’S HAND-DRAWN NEWSPAPERS PROJECT TO BE PUBLISHED IN APRIL

A new book exploring Turkish artist Serkan Özkaya's project to create hand-drawn versions of newspaper pages printed to replace the papers’ “real” pages will be published in April 2010. The book, which like the project is entitled Today Could Be a Day of Historical Importance, is a limited edition work of art that comes sealed in a tin can, presenting the owner with a dilemma: open the can and get to the content or preserve it as a collector's item.

For Today Could Be a Day of Historical Importance, launched eight years ago, Özkaya collaborated with newspapers across the globe to hand-draw the text and images of pages of their papers after they were laid out by the newspaper’s editors. The drawings were printed in place of the typeset pages, resulting in accessible, affordable, and unexpected works of art that were distributed to millions of people. The book includes discussions, interviews, and articles on the project, in addition to hundreds of color reproductions of all of Özkaya’s newspaper pages and photographs documenting his working process. Today Could Be a Day of Historical Importance is published by artwithoutwalls, the nonprofit arts organization that sponsored Özkaya’s most recent collaboration with Louisville’s The Courier-Journal in April 2009. The Courier-Journal recently won an award of excellence from the Society of Newspaper Design for this collaboration with Özkaya.

The 600 copies of the limited edition book will be for sale for $49.99 at 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, KY (www.shopat21c.com) and at Slag Gallery in New York (www.slaggallery.com). The book will be released to the public on April 9, 2010, the one year anniversary of Today Could Be a Day of Historical Importance in Louisville’s The Courier Journal and the inauguration of artwithoutwalls. Drawings from the project will be shown at Slag Gallery in New York City beginning April 29, 2010. In addition, Özkaya will present a talk about the project at the Drawing Center in New York on April 24, at 2 p.m.

Özkaya’s book design was executed by Vahit Tuna and A4 Ofset, the recipient of the best printing house award given by SAPPI. The lower right-hand corner acts as a flip-book, showing a short “movie” of Özkaya at work rendering The New York Times.

“This book is a work of art in itself,” said Alice Gray Stites, director of artwithoutwalls. “Like many of Özkaya's works, it is simultaneously playful and serious, whimsically calling into question our ideas of authenticity and reality.”

The opening essay by critic Isaac Spradlin, Extra! Extra! Works of Art, 75 Cents!, focuses on Özkaya's collaboration with The Courier-Journal. Özkaya’s collaboration with The Courier-Journal was commissioned by artwithoutwalls, a Louisville-based organization dedicated to bringing contemporary art into people’s daily lives, as its inaugural project. The book also includes articles and essays by arts writers including Ingo Arend, Diane Heilenmann, and Randy Kennedy of The New York Times.
Today Could Be a Day of Historical Importance was first realized in 2003 with the Turkish intellectual daily Radikal, where Özkaya hand-drew the first and last pages of the paper. Özkaya then went on to execute the concept in Sweden (Aftonbladet), Germany (Freitag), and the U.S. (The New York Times and The Courier-Journal).

About Serkan Özkaya
Born in Istanbul, Özkaya has shown his work in galleries around the world. In the past year he was the subject of solo shows at Slag Gallery, NY, Daniska, Istanbul and at 1k Projectspace, Amsterdam. He has participated in PERFORMA07, 9th International Istanbul Biennial, and in numerous international shows. With a longstanding interest in issues of authenticity, Serkan Özkaya frequently works in collaborative modes to question originality and authorship. For his restaurant collaboration series called Bring Me the Head of… Özkaya supplied casts for restaurants in Istanbul, Shanghai, and New York, and offered patrons the chance to buy a piece of art and consume it immediately. Özkaya has authored six books; including Have you ever done anything right, co-authored with Willoughby Sharp.

Istanbul-based designer Vahit Tuna has worked as a designer since 1995. Among his past work includes artist books, publications, periodicals, and posters for cultural institutions and festivals such as garajistanbul, Academie Schloss Solitude, and Galerist. Don and Sylvie Murphy built their house in the suburbs of Amsterdam for around $1.4 million, creating a structure “that looked as monolithic as possible,” Mr. Murphy said.

A spiral staircase leads down to the main entrance; the ball-shaped chair is from Villa ArenA. “I like furniture that works as a design object on its own,” Mr. Murphy said.

The bathtub was made by H2B, an Amsterdam company, but “the most luxurious thing about the bathroom,” Mr. Murphy said, “is the view.”

The Murphys' son Edan, 3, watches TV on a leather beanbag-style chair purchased at Villa ArenA, a furniture store in Amsterdam, for about $140.

Orange Corian, a nonporous material, was used throughout the kitchen -- where Ms. Murphy makes tea -- on the counters, the sink and the stovetop. “Orange is our color,” she said.

Pay attention to Mrs. Murphy's mug. It is designed by Klaus Haapaniemi for Finnish brand ittala, whose designs are mentioned often on my blog. I am a passionate collector of his designs.

Fitzsimmons Architects did a flaming great job of incorporating a heating source and ample seating for Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne's and his TV viewing room. We love how the A/V components are neatly tucked away at the end of the semi-circular built-in seating, conveniently reachable, but mostly out of sight. Really worth checking out the rest over here for all the other extraordinary details of a unique residence/studio.

living in 700- square foot bungalow in northeast los angeles, prop stylist and decorator emily henson has had to be particularly clever to create a space that can accommodate all 8 bodies who call it home: emily and husband erick, a tv editor; 2 little people – johnny, 7 and ella, 10; 2 french bulldogs – gracie and steve; and 2 cats – betty and cub. emily’s planning on adding to their ranks – soon there will be laying hens in the backyard! a big believer in the importance of personal touches, nearly every inch of the home has seen emily’s paintbrush or been customized in someway. emily’s motto is “creativity before consumption” – and it’s a philosophy she extends to her professional work with clients. working to find ways to use paint or reupholstering before hitting the shops. when it is time to shop, emily prefers thrift store and flea market finds – nothing too precious though. after all in this home, there are two dogs and two cats! and occasionally, the kids will strap on roller-skates and sail through the house! [photo above: I used to work as a Display Coordinator for Anthropologie. For a window display I spent about two weeks hand-making these birdhouses – cutting cardboard, painting them, and gluing fabric on about 100 of them. I was reluctant to throw them away when the display came down so, with permission, I took them home. I am not a painter! But I gave it a shot with this tree just so the birdhouses could have a home. The colors in the room are drawn from the bedding, which I made from a vintage sheet and the pillows from an Ikea sheet. The bed itself is a mini-bunk made by my brilliant husband from good old 2’ x 4’ ‘s and plywood! They started as side-by-side beds, then after a few months we made them into bunks to get a bit of floor space back.]

[photo above left: My son is a prolific artist and is literally always making something from morning to night. He occasionally sits at this desk (although mostly we trip over his projects all around the house). I borrowed the idea of books in a birdcage from my very creative mother-in-law. I was going to hang it from the ceiling, but for now it sits on a stool with the current favorites inside. photo above right: My kids love to collect stuff, so it gathers on this dresser. I’m a fan of a bit of kid clutter if it’s sort of orderly. Johnny collects tiny buildings for his vast family of imaginary friends to live in (Apparently there are hundreds of them and they all have names). Ella and I thought it was funny to put the dolls in the birdcage. Sensitive Johnny is not so amused, because they have feelings you know. And of course, more birdhouses!]

[Photo above: our living room changed dramatically about 6 months ago when I painted my wood floors white. Some people think it’s crazy, but for me it’s a million times better than our ebony stained floors before. Yes, they never look perfect, but the amount of light that is reflected throughout is so uplifting, I don’t care about scuffs here and there. The sofa is from Urban Outfitters found on craigslist, the mirror is from Revival, this great vintage place in LA. In the course of a week, I found the trash can (to hold magazines), tissue box, tray, and flower candle holders at different thrift stores – they all look like they were meant to be together!]

[Photo above: the kitchen was the first room we worked on when we bought the house and it was pretty grotty. A very tight budget meant getting creative. Someone gave us the subway tile (you can see we still have some finishing to do!), the butcher block countertop was Ikea, the cabinet doors came off and everything got a coat of paint. I like to collect interesting glassware and dishes so the open cabinets serve as display as well as storage. We’ve got some molding to replace around the door, but I actually like the way it looks unfinished.]

[Photo above: What to do when your massive TV threatens to dominate the room? Surround it by frames and hope it blends in! A lot of the artwork is by my brother, Duncan Simpson (he’s since swapped painting for photography). Some kids’ art is mixed in as well as some of my own Stitch Art portraits. Small space means no room for a piano – my kids both play, so the keyboard is our solution. Plop down on a pillow and play!]

[Photo above: there isn’t a dining room, so we eat at this table in the kitchen. We also store books under it. I’m a big believer in books everywhere! The floors are my favorite part of the kitchen. I almost chickened out and went with “safer” more traditional colors, but settled on the green and blue – 4 years on and we still love it. It’s the epitome of cheap and cheerful! I brought the garden chairs in from outside and wrapped some fabric on the seats. The fabric changes when we want to mix it up. The chalkboard started as a small rectangle of black a few years ago and it just looked silly on the white wall. So I kept going and covered the entire wall. Fun and very practical.]

[Photo above: this is the prop stylist in me let loose! More is more when it comes to a tabletop! There’s a supermarket near me that has the best selection of colorful product packaging! There are so many amazing food labels, coffee tins, water bottles. I love that stuff!]

[Photo above: A year ago we had our dingy garage converted into an office/art studio. I painted the previously white trim dark green and the doors this insane magenta. It transformed the house! Like the kitchen floors I almost went safe with the colors, but I’m so glad I didn’t. It’s not for everyone, but we love it. The plastic rug hides a bumpy driveway. In a year from now, the climbing jasmine will frame the doors.]

[Photo above: It’s amazing how a mere 150 square feet can dramatically change lives! There aren’t any extra rooms in the house so there was no way to have time away from each other or to work on a project. This studio is our answer! We put in inexpensive Ikea laminate flooring and Erick built the back bed/sofa and my work-table to the right. Our desks are three colorful file cabinets topped with wood and glass. Behind the curtain in the loft area is where we hide all our “stuff”. Remember, we lost our garage/storage area.]

[Photo above: At the back of the office Erick built a simple platform that serves as a couch for the kids to hang out when we’re working or even a spare bed for houseguests. He designed it so that we could fit 8 large rubber bins under it for extra storage. I made the large pillows from these lovely fabric squares I buy downtown for a few dollars each. The mirror is a junk shop piece I painted neon green.]

[Photo above: I used some old wallpaper samples as a temporary inspiration board above our computer desk and it ended up staying. I don’t like the way mouse pads look, so I use fabric scraps instead. The nice thing about the wood and glass desktop is you can slide things between the two - photos, inspiring images, kids drawings. Mine got a bit chaotic so I’m keeping it simple for now.]

[Photo above: This is to the right of the computer desk – it’s one long desktop resting on file cabinets. Let me say that it never looks this tidy! Sometimes my husband’s laptop sits there with all the cables and gear that go with it. I got the shelves with the brackets already attached at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Pasadena for next to nothing. I love that place!]

Like most of you, to collect is a habit of mine too. When I was a kid I used to collect napkins, matchboxes or tasos from chips.

As I got older these led to CDs, posters and etc. Now that I am into interior design mostly for kitchenware, I try to combine my passion for illustration&design with good quality homeware.

Some novice collectors start purchasing items that appeal to them, and then slowly work at acquiring knowledge about how to build a collection. Others (more cautious or studious types, like myself) want to develop some background in the field before starting to buy items. That background goes until my childhood and now it echoes today. I find amusing to collect Marimekko and ittala designs, especially designs by Klaus Haapaniemi, who is my long time favourite illustrator.

His CV of design work is impressive: garment prints for Diesel, Levis, Marimekko, Dolce & Gabbana, Cacharel and Bela’s Dead, a new brand. He has also worked as Creative Director of the Italian fashion house Bantam, published a book entitled ‘Giants’ together with the Finnish writer Rosa Liksom, produced illustrations for the Observer newspaper, shown his work in exhibitions – and done a few other things in between.

Taika means ‘magic’ in Finnish, and Klaus Haapaniemi wants his illustrations to inspire your own imagination and storytelling. Combined with other essential design objects of the Iittala collection, Taika gives a magic touch to everyday life.

This new Marimekko tableware was designed by Sami Ruotsalainen, a graduate of the University of Art and Design Helsinki with a Master’s Degree in ceramic and glass design. The first patterns for the new tableware were drawn by Maija Louekari, B.A.

At the end of the day, they're the pleasure you get when sipping a green tea and relax.
